Belgium 2 England 0

The game nobody wants to play and doesn’t really care if they win. So much for the last time these two met, what about today? Well Gareth Southgate has been talking about the players winning a medal (do you actually get a medal for being third?) so if they do win it’ll be hailed as a great achievement. If Belgium win it’ll revert to the status of a friendly. Both sides playing strong sides so taking it seriously.

As it turned out there was little doubt that Belgium were by far the better team, regularly cutting England open but settling for just the two goals. Quite incredible to think some people seriously thought this very limited side could actually win the World Cup. Incredible.

Funny how two weeks ago England were one of the best sides ever to play at a World Cup, on a par with Brazil 1970. Now they are way behind Belgium who are “ six years ahead of England” according to Glen Hoddle. Some turnaround.

It turned out there were medals at the end. For Belgium. For England it was just hard cheese and small beer.
