Brazil 2 Mexico 0

Brazil for this surely? We can’t have another big name going out can we? Nice to see both sides in their first choice kits, something of a rarity at this tournament.

Mexico gave as good as they got in the early stages but Brazil steadily got on top although neither side created real clear-cut chances in a disappointing half.

Coutinho at least had a shot on target just after the restart and five minutes in Neymar turned in a Willian cross-cum-shot. Paulinho then had a shot saved by Ochoa as Brazil went for the killer second but Mexico showed they hadn’t given up as Vela had a shot tipped over. Willian joined the list of failed shooters as Ochoa again kept him out.

Layun stupidly stood purposely on Neymar’s ankle, leading to the usual theatrics from the world-renowned cheat who looked like he was trapped in a tumble dryer, but the Mexican incredibly got away without a card.

Mexico mounted a spirited attempt to get forward in the closing minutes but couldn’t threaten Brazil’s goal and with only two to go Firminho prodded in a blocked Neymar shot to end the contest.

Mexico out at this stage for the seventh tournament in succession, Brazil through but it’s sad to say that a lot of the joy of watching them has gone, partly due to eejits like Neymar but also to the much more pragmatic style they now employ.
